Getting Existential.

I was raised in a very free thinking household when it came to religion. Spirituality was encouraged but not pressed. I am still learning and always curious to discover new ‘truths.’ I believe in something bigger than us. And further I accept my ignorance on the topic.

I was a pre-med biology major. In my classes, the word religion seems to be viewed as one of foul taste. A result of the separation of church and state, I get it.

And yet I cannot help but ask, why is there something rather than nothing?

If one looks at the Universe, they must assess that everything is in either perfect order or complete chaos. There are arguments for both. But I think the key is to look at the largest scale possible.

I cannot tell you why sometimes bad things happen to good people. But I can tell you that the evidence of an omnipresent and sage energy is overwhelming.

If we observe our world and the life that exists among it, we will notice there is perfection midst our existence. The cycles of life and death are perfectly balanced, maintaining this equilibrium without fault. And not only this, but as a global community, life sustains life. The 20,000 breaths of air we take each day relies on a biosphere with a precise composition. One change in this, and life does not exist. We would not exist. The sunlight gives way to grass and flowers, our cattle graze on this, and we benefit from the survival and wellness of the cows. A species as small as a bee and the process of pollination supplies food to millions. There is order in these cycles. There is order in the orbits of our solar system.

An experiment was conducted in Arizona toward the end of the 20th Century in which a group of researchers tried to create an enclosed environment of different biomes containing agriculture, bodies of water, and functioning habitats. It was called Biosphere 2. Everything within it was closely regulated and controlled, including gas composition. No air was let in or out of the environment. The idea behind the experiment was to create a sustainable environment that could be used to habitat another place in outer space. The results were a flop. Man was unable to recreate an environment in which life could occur.

So if humans can’t produce a habitat for life with extreme intention, how is it reasonable to suggest that life has occurred so vastly with none of any kind?

The size of our Universe in incomprehensible. And this planet of ours is comparatively insignificant. Yet… with all of this order, nothing can be.
